Esther's Aid for Needy and Abandoned Children began its grass-roots operations in New Rochelle, New York in 1999 to help children in need and the homeless in our local community. In partnership with churches, we immersed ourselves in working in homeless shelters, group homes, feeding the poor and other humanitarian efforts.
During a visit to Rwanda in April of 2000, former UN Diplomat and Founder Clare Effiong witnessed the aftermath of the 1994 genocide. Stunned by the devastation and unbelievable suffering endured by small children on the street, Clare felt called to refocus her efforts from New York to Rwanda. She saw children without parents, shelter, little clothing, poorly nourished, and in poor health. Hundreds were living at the garbage dump, struggling for survival. Esther's Aid was established in Rwanda with the goal of rescuing and protecting children from the hazards of poverty, abandonment, malnutrition, HIV/AIDS, drug addiction, child labor, sexual exploitation, and trafficking.
